उमा संत कइ यहि बड़ाई। मंद करत जो करइ भलाई॥
संत हृदय नवनीत समाना। कहा कबिन्ह परि कहै न जाना॥

भगवान शिव माता पार्वती (उमा) से कहते हैं कि हे उमा! सच्चे संतों की सबसे बड़ी महिमा यही है कि वे बुराई करने वाले का भी सदैव भला ही करते हैं। कवियों ने संतों के हृदय को मक्खन (नवनीत) के समान कोमल कहा है, परंतु मक्खन तो केवल अपने ताप से पिघलता है, जबकि संतों का हृदय दूसरों के दुःख से पिघल जाता है।
English: Lord Shiva tells Goddess Uma: "The supreme greatness of a true saint is that they respond with unconditional benevolence even toward those who act with malice." While poets compare a saint’s heart to soft butter, butter melts only under its own heat, whereas a saint’s heart melts at the suffering of others.
